چکیده

We study the role of a strong electron confinement on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering from molecules adsorbed on small noble-metal nanoparticles. We describe a novel enhancement mechanism which originates from the different effect that confining potential has on s-band and d-band electrons. We demonstrate that the interplay between finite-size and screening efects in the nanoparticle surface layer leads to an enhancement of the surface plasmon local field acting on a molecule located in a close proximity to the metal surface. Our calculations show that the additional enhancement of the Raman signal is especially strong for small nanometersized nanoparticles.

Finite-size effects in surface-enhanced Raman scattering in noble-metal nanoparticles: a semiclassical approach.

We study finite-size effects in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from molecules adsorbed on small metal particles. Within an electromagnetic description of SERS, the enhancement of the Raman signal originates from the local field of the surface plasmon resonance in a nanoparticle. With decreasing particle sizes, this enhancement is reduced due to the size-dependent Landau damping of the...

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering in Small Noble-Metal Nanoparticles

We present a microscopic theory of quantum-size effects in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from molecules adsorbed on small metal nanoparticles. In noble-metal nanoparticles, the confining potential has different effect on s-band and d-band electrons. Namely, the spillout of delocalized sp-electrons beyond the classical nanoparticle boundary results in an incomplete embedding of s-elec...

Identification of intracellular gold nanoparticles using surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

The identification of intracellular distributions of noble metal nanoparticles is of great utility for many biomedical applications. We present an effective method to distinguish intracellular from extracellular nanoparticles by selectively quenching the SERS signals from dye molecules adsorbed onto star-shaped gold nanoparticles that have not been internalized by cells.

Raman enhancement of rhodamine adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles self-assembled into nanowire-like arrays

This work reports on Raman scattering of rhodamine (R6G) molecules absorbed on either randomly distributed or grating-like arrays of approximately 8-nm Ag nanoparticles developed by inert gas aggregation. Optimal growth and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) parameters have been obtained for the randomly distributed nanoparticles, while effects related to the aging of the silver nanoparti...

Niobium pentoxide: a promising surface-enhanced Raman scattering active semiconductor substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique, as a powerful tool to identify the molecular species, has been severely restricted to the noble metals. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates based on semiconductors would overcome the shortcomings of metal substrates and promote development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique in surface science, spectroscopy, and biomedicine st...
